Position Summary:  

The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the various programs and services in the ODU Residence Hall community with the goal of developing a positive community environment that supports the academic goals of the students and the mission of the University.   The Area Coordinator is one of two full-time, live-on Residence Life professionals at ODU.  The position requires seasoned judgment to provide direction and support in the form of advisement of the Resident Assistant staff and their programs, execution of crisis management and policy enforcement, and building maintenance.  The Area Coordinator utilizes student development theory and strategies to provide an environment in the residence halls that enhances academic, personal, and social development in the residents.



Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular office hours on days when University offices are open. Additional office hours may be required outside the normal work week.
  • Promote a positive and professional image on campus; abide by the rules and regulations of the University and model mutual respect and inclusion for all residents.
  • This is a live-in position. Occupancy of the University provided apartment is for the duration of the appointment to the position. It is expected that the AC will keep their apartment clean and role model this behavior for residents.
  • Readily accessible while on-call and as required.
  • Work cooperatively with facilities, housekeeping, Information Services, and Public Safety employees to maintain efficient operations of the residence hall. This includes functions that might be specific to their residence hall including, but not limited to, computer lab maintenance, copiers, work orders and the storage and maintenance of carts and dollies.
  • The Area Coordinator is assigned buildings for which they are responsible for the day-to-day operations, residents, and staff and all processes associated with these entities, including, but not limited to key collection, distribution and management, and front desk operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding all residence hall facilities in order to respond to on-call and emergency situations.
  • Supervise the Resident Assistants in their assigned building(s) and various work study students as well as indirectly supervises the RAs of other residence halls.
  • Promote and encourage a sense of community, individual responsibility, and respect for others through various programs and services. This includes the advisement of programming efforts within the residence hall, attendance at hall functions, and will work to get to know all residential students on campus. 
  • Serve as a resource and representative of ODU to all students, parents, alumni, staff and faculty members, and all community partners.
  • Responsible for participating in and supporting functions of the Student Development division as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, the opening and closing of the residence halls each semester, high profile weekends such as Orientation, ODU Day, Homecoming, Lil Sibs Weekend, and Commencement.
  • Work with the appropriate members of the Residence Life team to communicate the rights and responsibilities of the individuals and the community, and facilitate discussion when those rights come into conflict. The AC will encourage the development of student leadership skills and will encourage students to participate in the residence hall community.
  • Strive to respond to student requests in a timely and informative manner, including advising, counseling and referring students to appropriate resources on campus.
  • Model an appreciation for diversity among residents while understanding individual differences between people.
  • Make regular rounds of buildings.
  • Work to ensure that ODU policies are uniformly and fairly enforced.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life to investigate and address alleged violations of the Student Handbook as a hearing officer in a manner that is rooted in student development theory, including preparing and communicating procedure for all paperwork and reports that detail the conduct system within the residence halls and maintaining all conduct related files.
  • Provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population according to a predetermined schedule including all break periods.
  • Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other campus departments. The AC will prepare and maintain records of incidents, problems, and campus activities as they affect the residence halls and the resident population.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life to select, train, and supervise the resident assistants and various work student students.
  • Develop, at the direction of the Director of Residence Life, training modules and advisement that will seek to assist the RAs in developing a hall environment conducive to the Residence Life learning outcomes and the mission and vision of ODU.
  • Attend, participate, and assist in the facilitation of all staff trainings and other education opportunities.
  • Meet regularly with RA staff individually, and as a group, to discuss their performance, personal leadership development goals, their residents, and issues affecting their specific hall and residence life community.
  • Responsible for supervising RA programming, conflict mediation, and conducting regular evaluations of the RA staff performance in coordination with the Director of Residence Life. The Area Coordinator is expected to develop an administrative style that encourages creativity and provides motivation for the RA staff.
  • Support the different programs of Residence Life office as needed.
  • Maintain positive relationships with other Residence Life staff members, with other members of the Division of Student Development, with other departments on campus, and with faculty and staff.
  • Play a significant role with retention associated efforts, including but not limited to serving as a Retention Alert case worker through the Office of Student Success.
  • Participate in campus committees to aid their professional development as long as it does not affect their residence life responsibilities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of ODU information.
  • Attend staff meetings and other University events at the request of the Director, or other University official.
  • Perform corollary assignments including but not limited to advisement of Residence Hall Association.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 2 years prior experience working with students in a residence hall environment or in a student development role.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Word and Excel.
  • Valid Driver's License.
